Thomas James Franz

June 1, 1942 – March 27, 2025

Thomas James Franz, a devoted father, grandfather, businessman, and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, passed away on March 27, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born on June 1, 1942, Tom grew up with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit that shaped his life. During his service in Vietnam, he endured unimaginable hardship, surviving an attack that claimed the lives of many fellow Marines—one of only two who made it out. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded two Purple Hearts. His experiences in war instilled in him a deep sense of resilience and gratitude, values he carried with him throughout his life.

For many years, Tom owned and operated Freeport Produce in Freeport, Illinois. What began as a small retail grocery store grew into a wholesale business. He worked tirelessly to support his family and provide for those around him, navigating both the rewards and challenges that come with running a business.

Beyond his work, Tom was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, always ready with a joke or a funny story to share. He cherished time with his family, and for the last seven years of his life, he lived directly next door to his grandchildren, making countless memories with them every day.

Tom is survived by Jeff Franz, Jon Franz (Jenni), and Jason Franz (Brooke), who carry on his legacy of hard work and integrity. He was also a beloved grandfather to 11 grandchildren and had the joy of welcoming his first great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 15, at 10 AM at First Congregational Church of Winter Park, FL, followed by a light lunch. Later that afternoon, at 2 PM, Tom will be laid to rest at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL, with a full military burial, including an honor guard, flag folding ceremony, 21-gun salute, and the playing of Taps. A dear friend will serve as chaplain.

He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his resilience in the face of life’s challenges, and the laughter he brought to those around him. His stories, wisdom, and presence will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VFW Post 4228 in his memory.
